KATHO HIVV is now also doing it ‘blended’
At the start of the academic year, many nursing students again chose Medical French as an optional course. This year, a pilot program was started: one third of the students followed a blended course (face-to-face sessions + e-learning), the rest followed a traditional course. All students first completed a language test in order to determine their general level of French. The e-Screening developed by BLCC was used for this. Once they got started, the students following the blended course prepared the necessary theoretical contents and exercises concerning medical French on the e-learning platform at home. During the face-to-face sessions, the trainer – Catherine Dubois – then emphasised the verbal skills of the students. She used simulation exercises among others for this. This blended course could be developed thanks to the cooperation of KATHO HIVV, KULAK, AZ Groeninge and BLCC. We can definitely call the project with KATHO a success. Today, the students still work on average about 26 hours on the e-learning platform.
Nicole Viaene, department head of HIVV testifies:
“The e-screening gave us a good idea of the students’ level of French at the start of the training. Because of this, the trainer was able to harmonise her lessons with the students’ levels. The combination of e-learning with c-learning is definitely a good method of working. Students learn to study independently at home and are offered realistic and practical case studies during the face-to-face sessions at which they can practice their verbal skills.”
